Mourant boosts finance and funds teams 

February 25, 2009 - Offshore law firm Mourant du Feu & Jeune has made a series of senior promotions to strengthen its finance and funds teams. Tony Gibson (Cayman), Marcel Cariou (Guernsey), Matthew Shaxson (pictured) and Warren Simmons (both Jersey) have all been promoted to senior associate. 

ShaxtonGibson joined Mourant du Feu & Jeune having trained and qualified at SJ Berwin in their private equity funds team. He is based in the firm’s Grand Cayman office and primarily acts for investment managers in the structuring, formation and closing of pan-European and global private equity and hedge funds; establishing complex tax-efficient carried interest arrangements for fund executives in numerous jurisdictions; advising investors investing in similar funds and advising said funds on underlying corporate transactions. He also provides advice with regard to restructuring such funds to reflect market conditions including the utilisation of side pockets, parallel 'manage out structures' and the emergence of hybrid vehicles adopting some of the restrictions on liquidity of a private equity fund while maintaining the characteristics of hedge fund economics. 

In addition, Guernsey-based advocate, Marcel Cariou joined Mourant du Feu & Jeune in November 2007. He specialises in a broad range of corporate, commercial, finance and investment funds law and regulation. Cariou was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1987 and to the Guernsey Bar as an advocate in 2004. 

Matthew Shaxson qualified as an English solicitor in 1997 in the corporate finance department of a US firm’s City of London office, where he specialised in mergers and acquisitions, IPOs, fund raisings and joint venture arrangements for fully listed, AIM listed and unlisted companies and individual entrepreneurs. He joined Mourant du Feu & Jeune in July 2006 to focus on Jersey mergers and acquisitions advice. Warren Simmons started his legal career with Clifford Chance in 1990 and following qualification as an English solicitor he worked in their New York and Moscow offices. After spending four years with Allen & Overy in Singapore, he relocated to Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2001 to work again with Clifford Chance. He joined Mourant du Feu & Jeune in 2005 and deals with corporate, structured finance, securitisation, restructuring and derivative matters.
